Dear ,

Welcome to our weekly collection of news, research, articles, books, videos, and creative resources about senior living, retirement, and care in Mexico. We explore independent and assisted living, ways to extend our healthy years, and the challenges of living with conditions such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, limited mobility, and other complex care needs.

Each week, I write articles, research hotels and restaurants, share quotes and affirmations, annotate YouTube videos, and create songs and travel posters. These are my ways of staying connected with you: those planning for later life, those already navigating its challenges, and the families, spouses, partners, and friends who care for them. My hope is to offer useful information, a little encouragement, and opportunities to appreciate the beauty and possibilities that remain at every stage of life.

This week, we consider a deeply personal subject: what happens to our remains after we die. We explore the choices available and the practical, emotional, cultural, and environmental considerations that can help us make decisions consistent with our wishes and values.

Alongside this week’s featured topic, you’ll find our usual mix of:
  • San Miguel de Allende highlights: The places, people, food, and culture that make this a special place to live.
  • Health and wellness insights: Research, articles, videos, and perspectives on aging well and navigating care.
  • Care options and community life at Cielito Lindo: Flexible, affordable living and care with warmth and personal attention.

I hope this newsletter brings something useful and meaningful to your week. If someone you know might appreciate it, please forward it to them. They can subscribe through our newsletter page.

If you prefer to stop receiving these emails, you can unsubscribe at any time using the "Unsubscribe" or "Opt Out" link at the bottom of this newsletter.

Warmly,
James

This Week’s Theme:
This week's newsletter explores the doubts, fears, and challenging thoughts we sometimes have as caregivers.
Weekly insights into San Miguel:
  • Colorful and Epicurean San Miguel - This is such an amazing place, particularly the food and the colors. Although we are addressing a topic that is stressful, challenging, and emotional, we should also acknowledge what an incredible place San Miguel is.

Travel Poster - Lavaderos Del Chorro

Beneath a canopy of green, the Lavaderos del Chorro reveal a quieter side of San Miguel de Allende. Here, stone washbasins form a gentle rhythm against warm walls, their worn edges catching the afternoon light as leaf shadows drift across the paving. These historic communal washing places recall a city shaped as much by everyday routines as by grand architecture. Pause a while, take in the textures of stone and plaster, and let this intimate corner of San Miguel reward the simple pleasure of wandering.

Dia de Los Muertos

Día de Muertos invites us to remember the children who left us too soon, the adults who shaped our lives, and those who no longer have anyone to speak their names. In some communities, these observances span October 30 through November 2. Through flowers, candles, photographs, and stories, we honor those who came before us and affirm that every life deserves remembrance. The Hotels of San Miguel: Hotel Matilda
Contemporary art, thoughtful dining, and boutique luxury on Calle Aldama
Address: Aldama 53, Centro, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato
Telephone: +52 415 152 1015 · Website

Atmosphere & Character
Hotel Matilda expresses San Miguel’s artistic identity through contemporary design. Clean lines, restrained interiors, and strategically placed artworks create the atmosphere of a small gallery where guests can settle in and stay awhile. Opened in 2010, the hotel has 32 individually designed rooms, keeping its scale intimate while giving it a distinct personality. Hotel Matilda

The appeal lies in the relationship between the city outside and the spaces within. Calle Aldama supplies the historic surroundings; Matilda brings a modern aesthetic to the experience. For travelers who enjoy photography, sculpture, and interiors with a clear point of view, the hotel offers reasons to pause and look closely between excursions.

Accommodations
Room categories include Deluxe, Grand Deluxe, Junior Suites, and larger suites. Individual layouts vary considerably. The official room descriptions distinguish between accommodations with balconies and those with interior views, so choosing a category alone may not establish the outlook or sense of space a guest expects.

Listed amenities include Nespresso machines, Wi-Fi, safes, minibars, and bath products. Deluxe accommodations generally feature king beds, while Junior Suites are described as predominantly offering two queen beds. Confirm the precise configuration and occupancy terms when booking. Rooms and amenities

For a more expansive stay, Marriott describes an Owner’s Suite with a separate living room and private balcony, and Luxury Suites with walk-in rain showers and deep soaking tubs. Ask for photographs of the actual room being offered, especially if a balcony, separate shower, or generous sitting area is important. Suite details

Service
Published guest feedback provides encouraging evidence about hospitality. Expedia reviews include praise for welcoming reception staff, helpful responses to requests, cleanliness, and turndown service. At the time of research, the platform displayed a service-and-staff score of 9.4 out of 10. Expedia guest feedback

Experiences are not uniform, however. Some visitors describe peaceful stays, while others mention sound carrying into rooms or uneven breakfast service. Light sleepers should discuss room placement and ask about events during their dates. A smaller hotel’s atmosphere can still change with restaurant activity and neighboring guests. Published reviews

Dining and Breakfast
Dining is a substantial part of Matilda’s identity. Moxi, overlooking the pool, presents chef Vicente Torres’s approach to local ingredients with Mediterranean influences. The hotel also now lists Bovine upstairs, describing a contemporary French bistro with an intimate dining room and an art-filled terrace. Poolside Monkey Bar completes the offering with cocktails. These venues give guests several reasons to spend an evening at the property. Hotel dining

Moxi publishes a breakfast menu, but guests should confirm what their room rate includes. A continental breakfast allowance and a full à la carte meal are different arrangements, and package terms may vary. This review does not offer a firsthand assessment of the cooking. Moxi

Amenities
The principal amenities support a stay with time reserved for the hotel itself:
  • Outdoor infinity-edge swimming pool.
  • Spa offering massages, facials, and hammam rituals.
  • Fitness facilities.
  • Restaurants and cocktail venues.
  • On-site parking.
  • Airport transfers by arrangement.
  • Pet-friendly accommodations, subject to restrictions and fees.

Marriott lists complimentary on-site parking and a pet policy with size and occupancy restrictions. Confirm current charges and conditions before arrival. Property amenities

Spa Matilda is a particular attraction for guests planning a restorative afternoon. Its current schedule lists Wednesday through Monday, 9 a.m.–8 p.m., with Tuesday closure. Reserve treatments in advance and verify the schedule for your stay. Spa Matilda

Location and Accessibility
The Aldama address places Matilda close to Parque Juárez and within walking reach of the historic center. It is a useful position for combining sightseeing with time at the pool, a treatment, or a return to the room before dinner. Expedia identifies the park as approximately one block away. Location information

For travelers with limited mobility, Marriott lists elevators, mobility-accessible rooms, accessible parking, and accessible routes to several public facilities, including the restaurant, spa, and pool entrance. These are promising features, but confirm the specific room and complete route from vehicle drop-off before booking. Ask about shower access, thresholds, and any assistance needed; an accessible pool entrance does not necessarily establish assisted access into the water. Accessibility details

Who It’s Best For
Hotel Matilda is particularly appealing for couples, art enthusiasts, and travelers who want contemporary design within San Miguel’s historic surroundings. Its dining and spa offerings also suit visitors who enjoy making the hotel part of their itinerary.

The strongest fit is a stay with time to appreciate those amenities. Travelers planning to spend nearly every waking hour elsewhere may find less value in paying for the full experience.

Final Thoughts
Matilda’s strongest case is the combination of distinctive design, intimate scale, dining, and an advantageous location. Its personality feels closely connected to San Miguel’s continuing artistic life.

Choose the room with care, establish what the rate includes, and leave some unscheduled time to enjoy the property. The appeal is as much in returning for a leisurely afternoon as it is in stepping out to explore.

Restaurant Reviews: Garambullo Fonda Gourmet
Creative breakfasts and courtyard charm on Calle Ánimas
Address: Ánimas 48, Centro, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato
Telephone: +52 415 152 3388

Days and Hours
Garambullo serves breakfast, brunch, and lunch. Restaurant Guru currently lists Wednesday through Monday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., with Tuesday closed. Other published schedules differ, so confirm directly before making a special trip. Current listing

Atmosphere
Some of San Miguel’s most appealing meals begin with the discovery of a welcoming space behind an ordinary street entrance. Garambullo’s combination of indoor seating and an attractive courtyard offers precisely that possibility: somewhere to settle into the morning and let breakfast become part of the day’s pleasure. Time Out highlights its patio and inviting atmosphere in its selection of the city’s restaurants. Time Out

Rustic stone walls and a contemporary coffee bar give the interior a balance of warmth and simplicity, according to Darla Travels. The setting suggests an easy choice for conversation over coffee or a leisurely breakfast before exploring Centro. Darla Travels

Service
Published guest feedback frequently praises the welcoming owners and friendly service. That personal hospitality is an important part of the restaurant’s appeal, although individual reports cannot establish how consistently service performs during busy periods. Guest feedback

Cuisine
Garambullo approaches daytime dining with a combination of Mexican flavors and international breakfast ideas. Time Out notes its use of locally sourced ingredients and the availability of gluten-free options. It is an appealing direction for diners who want a satisfying breakfast with some variety beyond the familiar combinations. Guests with specific dietary requirements should discuss ingredients and preparation with the staff. Cuisine overview

Signature Dish
The poached egg casserole is a compelling first choice. Darla Travels describes eggs with salsa verde, beans, nopalitos, guacamole, and hoja santa—a combination that gives a familiar breakfast distinctly Mexican character. This is an editorial selection from published coverage, rather than a confirmed house-designated signature. Dish description

Starters
For a breakfast visit, consider asking about the day’s pastries and sharing one while choosing your main dish. Published guest comments mention the baked goods favorably. A pastry and coffee would make an uncomplicated beginning without turning brunch into an elaborate sequence of courses. Diner reports

Main Courses
The Sayulita breakfast offers another inviting combination: poached eggs over avocado toast with tomato, pesto, arugula, and beans alongside. Published coverage also features poached eggs on polenta, giving diners an alternative to the usual toast-based breakfast.

These dishes illustrate the appeal of Garambullo’s approach: recognizable ingredients arranged with enough imagination to make breakfast feel like an occasion. Confirm current availability when ordering. Breakfast selections

Desserts
Cookies and pastries appear in published diner reports, including mentions of chocolate cookies. Ask what is available that day; a small sweet with a second coffee may be the most fitting finish here. Published selections

Wine and Cocktails
Coffee deserves the attention in the available coverage. Darla Travels particularly praises the almond-milk lattes. I could not verify a current wine or cocktail list, so check directly if an alcoholic drink is an important part of your brunch plans. Coffee review

Final Thoughts
Garambullo deserves consideration for the quieter pleasures of dining in San Miguel: a welcoming setting, an interesting breakfast, and time to enjoy the company across the table. Its strongest appeal is to those who see brunch as a worthwhile part of their visit, deserving the same attention they might give an evening reservation.

Cost: $$ out of $$$$$. Published listings suggest approximately MXN 200–300 per person. Treat this as a general planning estimate; additional drinks, pastries, and gratuity may increase the total. Price reference
Overall Rating: ★★★★½ (4.5/5)

Research-based editorial rating reflecting the setting, breakfast offerings, and published guest feedback—not a firsthand dining assessment.

Information related to Mexico, senior care and health:
  • Lead article - These are articles specifically written for you each week. They address a wide range of relevant topics, such as factors that can increase your health and lifespan, diagnostics, understanding causal factors for Alzheimer's and other dementias, and so on. The lead article typically sets the tone for the core content of the newsletter (videos and book reviews). On occasion, the focus may be centered on Mexico, Pueblos Magicos, and San Miguel de Allende.
  • Caregiver's Sentiment - This quote typically honors what we, as caregivers, are going through and feeling.
  • Caregiver's Affirmation - This affirmation bolsters our self care, our image or ourselves on this journey and our ability to endure.
  • Videos - Typically, three videos are related to the lead article, and they include a summary and timestamped highlights.
  • Book Review - Typically related to the lead article.

Caregivers' Sentiment

Some decisions are made in circumstances we never wanted, with choices we would never willingly have faced. In caregiving, we may find ourselves choosing between what our loved one wants and what keeps them safe, or between providing all the care ourselves and accepting that we can no longer manage alone. Others may see the decision without seeing the sleepless nights, the conversations, the financial pressures, or the grief behind it. This quote asks for the compassion to pause before judging—to understand what was possible, what had already been tried, and what each remaining choice would cost. Understanding does not require agreement, but it does require humility. Sometimes the most loving decision available still hurts, and the person making it needs someone beside them who recognizes how much they wished there had been another way.

Caregiver Affirmation

I will not let the judgment of those who do not carry this weight define my worth. I know the care, thought, and difficult compromises behind decisions that others may only see from a distance. My love lives in the daily acts that often go unnoticed: the reassurance I offer, the needs I anticipate, and the patience I try to find even when I am tired. I trust the understanding I have gained by showing up, while giving myself permission to learn, reconsider, and accept help. Trusting myself does not mean carrying everything alone, and devotion does not require me to neglect my own well-being. I can listen to thoughtful guidance without accepting every criticism as truth. On days when doubt finds me, I will remember that I am a person doing demanding work with imperfect choices and human limits. I deserve the same tenderness I offer the person I love. I do not have to prove my worth by exhausting myself or defending every decision; I can honor the love behind my efforts and take the next step with compassion for us both.

Memento Mori, Ichigo Ichie, and My Friend Wally

My new friend Wally has early-stage dementia.

He also has a T-shirt that stops people in their tracks. It reads: "I am dying, you should try it. I am here now."

It may sound funny at first, in a dark and disarming way. Then it settles into something deeper. The shirt is not really about dying. It is about waking up. It is about presence. It is about the strange clarity that can come when a person stops pretending life is endless.

Wally has every right to be bitter. He has every right to feel cheated, angry, frightened, resentful, or consumed by sorrow. Dementia is cruel. It threatens memory, independence, identity, and the future itself. If anyone were entitled to host a daily pity party, it would be someone facing that reality.

And yet that is not Wally.

Video: Compassion Fatigue: What is it and do you have it? | Juliette Watt | TEDxFargo

In this heartfelt TEDxFargo talk, Juliette Watt explores the emotional toll of caring for others while gradually losing sight of our own needs. Drawing on her personal experience, she describes how exhaustion, irritability, isolation, and emotional numbness can leave caregivers feeling unlike themselves. Her central message is compassionate and reassuring: feeling depleted does not mean we have stopped caring or become a bad person. Watt encourages caregivers to establish boundaries, learn to say no, and make room for moments that restore their sense of self. The talk offers a reminder that our well-being deserves attention, too—and that we are not alone in finding caregiving overwhelming.
