Weekly insights into San Miguel:
  • Colorful and Epicurean San Miguel - This is such an amazing place, particularly the food and the colors. Although we are addressing a topic that is stressful, challenging, and emotional, we should also acknowledge what an incredible place San Miguel is.

Travel Poster - San Miguel de Allende

Step into a city where time seems to linger a little longer, where centuries-old stone glows amber in the afternoon sun and cathedral bells echo through winding cobblestone streets. San Miguel de Allende is a place of timeless romance, where flower-filled courtyards, graceful plazas, and elegant colonial architecture create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the world. Stroll beneath wrought-iron balconies draped in bougainvillea, linger over leisurely meals in charming cafés, and discover a vibrant community of artists, musicians, and artisans who have long found inspiration here. Whether you come in search of beauty, history, or simply a quieter pace of life, San Miguel welcomes you with warmth, grace, and unforgettable moments. Come for a holiday... and leave with your heart forever enchanted.

The Hotels of San Miguel: Casa Misión de San Miguel

Casa Misión de San Miguel feels like the kind of place one hopes to find in San Miguel before the city becomes too loud with plans: quiet, floral, intimate, and tucked just far enough from the Jardín to let the day arrive gently. This is not a large resort-style hotel; it is a small Spanish-mission-style bed and breakfast set on a quiet gated cul-de-sac, about five blocks from the central plaza, with protected parking and a leisurely walk into Centro.

Atmosphere:

The atmosphere is its greatest luxury. Casa Misión has the feeling of a private home kept with affection: peaceful gardens, a rooftop terrace, antique furnishings, oriental rugs, and rooms that seem to invite slow mornings rather than hurried checkouts. Guests often describe it as a hidden gem, especially noting the courtyard, flowers, rooftop, and the perfume of orange trees and jasmine.
Rooms:
With only six rooms, Casa Misión offers an intimate, boutique experience rather than the anonymity of a conventional hotel. The rooms are individually decorated and include thoughtful comforts such as luxury bed linens, gas fireplaces, ceiling fans, safes, robes, toiletries, and Wi-Fi. Flowers and fruit on arrival add to the sense that someone has prepared the room not just efficiently, but personally.
Service:
The service appears to be warm, personal, and guest-focused, more in the rhythm of a gracious B&B than a formal hotel. This is the sort of stay where hospitality is measured in small gestures: breakfast served fully rather than perfunctorily, help with local arrangements, and the sense of being cared for without being managed. A full daily breakfast is included, and some listings also mention concierge services, express check-in, airport transfer availability, and onsite wellness treatments.
Location:
Casa Misión’s location is one of its quiet advantages. Being about a 10-minute walk from the Jardín means you can reach the bells, cafés, galleries, and evening glow of Centro without sleeping directly inside its busiest pulse. For travelers who like to walk home slowly over old cobblestones after dinner, with the city cooling around them and lanterns coming on behind ironwork, the setting has a lovely balance.
Amenities:
Expect the comforts of a refined boutique B&B rather than a full-service resort. Amenities listed include complimentary breakfast, Wi-Fi, gardens, rooftop terrace, library, 24-hour fitness access on some booking platforms, free self-parking, and spa-style services such as massages, facials, manicures, pedicures, and aromatherapy.

Best For:

Casa Misión is best for couples, solo travelers, and San Miguel visitors who value intimacy, quiet, flowers, and old-world charm over scene-making. It would suit someone who wants to wake gently, linger over breakfast, walk into town, and return to a place that feels sheltered and human-scaled.
Final Thoughts:
Casa Misión de San Miguel is a romantic, understated choice for travelers drawn to the softer side of San Miguel de Allende. Its beauty is not theatrical; it is in the garden air, the hand-selected furnishings, the hush of a gated passageway, and the feeling of returning each evening to a house that has been waiting calmly for you. It may not be ideal for guests seeking a pool, nightlife, or a large hotel’s full range of services, but for those who want charm, privacy, and a tender sense of place, it feels like one of San Miguel’s quietly graceful stays.

Restaurant Review: La Sacristía Café
Calle Conde de la Canal 36, esquina Zacateros, Centro, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato 37700, Mexico Phone: +52 415 688 1339
Days and Hours:
Sunday: 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM
Monday through Saturday: 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM (hours may vary seasonally)

Atmosphere:

La Sacristía Café is one of San Miguel's most inviting breakfast and lunch destinations. Hidden behind a traditional colonial façade just a block from the Jardín Principal, the café opens into a lush courtyard shaded by mature trees, climbing vines, and flowering plants. The tranquil garden, accented by stone pathways and a fountain, feels like a secret oasis in the heart of the historic center.
The space strikes an ideal balance between elegant and casual. It is equally suited for a leisurely breakfast, a business meeting over coffee, or an afternoon escape with pastries and espresso. The relaxed ambiance encourages guests to linger, something both locals and returning visitors seem happy to do.
Service:
Service is consistently warm, attentive, and professional. Staff members are knowledgeable about the menu and are accommodating with dietary requests. During peak breakfast hours the pace can slow slightly, but the courtyard setting makes the wait feel far less noticeable. Hospitality is genuine rather than overly formal, creating an atmosphere that encourages repeat visits.

Cuisine:

La Sacristía focuses on elevated café cuisine built around fresh ingredients and thoughtful presentation. The menu blends traditional Mexican breakfast favorites with contemporary brunch offerings and international influences. Everything from house-baked pastries to smoothies, salads, gourmet sandwiches, and specialty coffee receives careful attention.
The emphasis is on quality rather than complexity. Ingredients are fresh, portions are generous, and presentation is consistently attractive.
Signature Dish:
The Chilaquiles Verdes have earned a loyal following among locals and visitors alike. Crisp tortillas retain their texture beneath a vibrant salsa verde and are topped with crema, cheese, onions, avocado, and your choice of protein. The dish is rich without becoming heavy and represents one of the better breakfast versions available in San Miguel.
Starters:
Although primarily a breakfast café, several lighter dishes stand out:
  • Fresh seasonal fruit with homemade yogurt and granola
  • House-baked pastries and muffins
  • Smoothies and fresh-pressed juices
  • Avocado toast on artisan sourdough
  • Homemade soups that rotate seasonally
The baked goods deserve particular mention and pair beautifully with the café's excellent coffee program.
Main Courses:
Breakfast remains the restaurant's strongest suit.
Highlights include:
  • Huevos Rancheros
  • Huevos Divorciados
  • French Toast with fresh fruit
  • Salmon Domos, a sophisticated brunch favorite featuring smoked salmon, eggs, avocado, and artisan bread
  • Gourmet omelets
  • Healthy grain bowls and salads
  • Paninis and sandwiches for lunch
The menu offers excellent vegetarian options and several vegan-friendly choices.
Desserts:
Desserts are simple but well executed.
Favorites include:
  • Cheesecake
  • Chocolate cake
  • Fresh pastries
  • Seasonal fruit tarts
Many guests simply order dessert alongside an afternoon cappuccino, making La Sacristía as much a coffee destination as a restaurant.
Wine and Cocktails:
While coffee is unquestionably the star, the beverage program is well-rounded.
Excellent choices include:
  • Café de Olla
  • Espresso and cappuccino made with Veracruz coffee
  • Cold brew
  • Fresh juices
  • Smoothies
  • Mimosas
  • Light wines
  • Seasonal cocktails
Coffee lovers will appreciate the attention given to preparation and bean quality. The espresso drinks consistently rank among the better café offerings in Centro.

Final Thoughts:

La Sacristía Café succeeds because it excels at the fundamentals. It offers beautiful surroundings, consistently well-prepared food, quality coffee, and friendly service without trying to be trendy or overly ambitious. In a city filled with excellent breakfast options, it has quietly established itself as one of the most dependable.
Unlike some of San Miguel's more famous cafés, which often develop long wait times, La Sacristía frequently provides a similarly memorable dining experience in a calmer setting. Whether you're starting your day with outstanding chilaquiles and café de olla, meeting friends for brunch, or seeking a peaceful afternoon coffee beneath the trees, it delivers exactly what visitors hope to find in San Miguel de Allende.

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4.6/5)

La Sacristía Café earns its reputation as one of Centro's hidden gems, offering exceptional breakfasts, outstanding coffee, and one of the city's most beautiful garden patios. It may not have the celebrity status of a few neighboring cafés, but many regular visitors consider it every bit as good, if not better.

Caregivers' Sentiment: Choose the Person that Hardship Helps Us Become
E
very caregiver experiences loss. We lose certainty, routines, dreams, and often pieces of the life we once imagined. Yet while we cannot choose many of the circumstances that caregiving brings, we can choose how those experiences shape our character. We can allow hardship to leave us bitter and defined by what has been taken from us, or we can let it cultivate patience, compassion, resilience, humility, and a deeper capacity to love. The pain is real, and it should never be minimized. But pain does not have to be the final chapter. In the end, caregiving is not only the story of caring for another person. It is also the story of the person we are quietly becoming ourselves. That chapter is still being written, and despite all that life has placed in our hands, we still hold the pen.

Caregiver's Affirmation

Every day of caregiving presents me with a choice. I cannot always choose the circumstances before me, the diagnosis, the losses, the uncertainty, or the heartache. But I can choose how I respond. I can allow these experiences to deepen my compassion rather than my bitterness, strengthen my resilience rather than my fear, and expand my capacity to love rather than diminish it. Each act of patience, each quiet sacrifice, and each moment of grace is shaping the person I am becoming. While caregiving may forever leave its mark on my life, I choose to let that mark be one of kindness, wisdom, humility, and purpose. Long after the difficult days have passed, I hope the lasting legacy of this journey will not simply be that I endured it, but that I emerged from it as a better human being.

Becoming the Author of Your Story

Before you read another word, let me assure you that this is not an article about positive thinking or pretending that caregiving is somehow easy.
It isn’t.

Caregiving changes us. Whether you’ve been caring for a spouse with Alzheimer’s disease, a parent with dementia, a child with special needs, or another loved one with a chronic illness, you already know that this journey reshapes every part of your life. It changes your relationships, your priorities, your future, your finances, your health, and eventually—even your sense of who you are.

The question is not whether caregiving will change you.

It will.

The question is: How will it change you? Who will you become?

I’ve spent a great deal of time reflecting on that question, both during the fifteen years I cared for my wife through early-onset Alzheimer’s disease and in the years that followed. Along the way, I came to realize something that extends far beyond caregiving. We all live according to an internal story about who we are, what life means, and what is possible. That story quietly shapes how we respond to every challenge we face—including the extraordinary challenges of caregiving.

This article is about that story, and why becoming aware of it may be one of the most important things we can do for ourselves as caregivers.
You can access the complete article here. Additionally, we have 100s of other senior care and health-related articles here.

Infographic: Becoming the Author of Your Story

Caregiving changes every one of us. It changes our routines, our relationships, our priorities, and often our vision of the future. But beneath those visible changes, something even more profound is happening. It is quietly reshaping the story we tell ourselves about who we are. That inner story influences how we respond to loss, hardship, and uncertainty, and ultimately determines not only how we survive the caregiving journey, but who we become because of it.

I created this infographic as a visual companion to my article, Becoming the Author of Your Story. It explores a simple but powerful idea: while we cannot choose every chapter life writes for us, we can choose the meaning we carry forward from those experiences. My hope is that it encourages caregivers to pause for a few moments and reflect, not only on what caregiving has asked of them, but also on the strength, compassion, resilience, and purpose it may be quietly cultivating within them. Don't let caregiving become only the story of what you've lost. Let it also become the story of who you're becoming.

Before you play this song, I'd like to share a thought. I don't think we're ever just one thing. We can be good and bad, happy and sad, grateful and hurting—all at the same time.

That is certainly true for me. Day in and day out, I am genuinely happy and incredibly grateful. But I also recognize that I have plenty of pain and sadness buried deep below the surface. I think that's true for many, if not most, of us. We carry it quietly, often without anyone knowing it's there.

If You Cry

"If You Cry"
was born from a simple but overwhelming truth: sometimes we hold so much pain inside that we're afraid if we ever let ourselves cry, we may never stop. For many of us, life requires us to keep moving forward despite heartbreak, loss, disappointment, or unimaginable hardship. We learn to be strong because we have to. We bury our grief, convince ourselves we're okay, and carry on for the sake of the people who depend on us. But buried pain doesn't disappear—it waits quietly beneath the surface.

This song is deeply personal, but it isn't only my story. It's for caregivers who spend their days carrying the weight of others while quietly setting aside their own sorrow. It's for anyone who has lost someone they love, faced illness, endured trauma, or simply survived seasons of life that asked more of them than they thought they could give. Sometimes another person's tears become the permission we've denied ourselves for years. In that shared vulnerability, we discover that healing doesn't begin by pretending we're strong—it begins the moment we realize we don't have to carry our burdens alone.

My hope is that this song reminds anyone who hears it that tears are not a sign of weakness. They are evidence of love, of resilience, and of the courage to finally let the heart speak. If this song helps even one person feel seen, understood, or a little less alone, then it has already become everything I hoped it could be.

If You Cry
Key: D minor Tempo: 68 BPM  Time Signature: 6/8 Genre: Slow Ballad

Verse 1
Don't look at me with those breaking eyes,
I've spent years learning how not to fall,
Every memory lives behind locked doors,
Brings me to my knees, I can barely even crawl.

I stitched my heart with invisible thread,
Told myself that silence makes me strong.
But silence only buries echoes deep,
It never says they're gone.

Pre-Chorus
I've become so good at holding oceans still,
Pretending all these storms have finally passed.

Chorus
If you cry...
Then I might cry too.
And I don't think I'd ever stop,
Once my sadness flows through.

For every goodbye I swallowed whole,
Every wound I learned to hide,
I've buried all my broken years
Carried deep inside.

So don't ask if I'm okay…
Don't tell me it'll all be fine...
Because if you cry,
I might finally let myself cry.

Verse 2
There are voices underneath the floorboards,
Calling names I've tried not to recall.
Every little hurt became another stone,
Building up this quiet wall.

People think that healing looks like smiling,
They never hear the weight beneath my skin.
Sometimes surviving isn't moving forward...
It's simply holding in.

Bridge
Maybe tears were never meant for weakness.
Maybe grief was never meant to stay alone.
Maybe every heart that's learned to hide
Is only searching for a place called home.

Maybe all these years I wasn't healing…
I was only freezing time.

Final Chorus
If you cry...
Then I might cry too.
Let every hidden sorrow rise,
Every sky I've painted blue.

For every love I couldn't save,
Every dream I left behind,
Maybe the flood I've feared for years
Is mercy in disguise.

So if we cry…
Let's cry until the morning light.

Maybe what's been buried all this time
Was never meant to die.
